Ken Starr learned the art of making wine by his father’s side in 1952. When stationed in Europe in the early 60’s, Ken visited many wineries and appreciated the German style of wine making. He started making wine on his own from 1966 to 1977.
In 1994, he purchased property in Curwensville, Pennsylvania and planted 12 vines. By 1998, there were 3000 vines… Concord, Niagara, Traminette, Foch and Leon Millot. He built a winery in 1998 and started making wine again. The wine was good prompting him to go commercial in 2005. Starr Hill Vineyard & Winery is located on 13 acres in Clearfield County and is the 23rd largest producer of wine in Pennsylvania, producing over 40 varieties of delicious,

Our winery opened its doors in the summer of 1994, with an inventory of 1100 gallons in eight varieties. Our tiny tasting bar accommodated five people. Twelve years and six additions later the Winery at Wilcox, Your Winery in Pennsylvania, now has a capacity of nearly 60,000 gallons, with over 31 selections for the 2009-2010 vintage. When we opened our doors in 1994. The Winery at Wilcox was the smallest of Pennsylvania’s 40 wineries. At present, we are one the state’s five largest wineries and have become a leader in the Pennsylvania wine industry.
Under the ownership of Mike and Carol Williams we have built our reputation with a line of top quality products and unsurpassed customer service. Recently, with the addition of son Jamie into the business, our winery has truly become a family affair.
This amazing growth could not have been achieved without the outstanding local and regional support and we have received throughout the years. Without your patronage, we could not continue to produce wines of the highest quality. Without the local work force we could not provide the excellent customer service you have come to expect from The Winery at Wilcox, Your Winery in Pennsylvania. Quite simply, without you, the community, The Winery at Wilcox would not and could not exist. That is why we at The Winery at Wilcox want you to think of “Our” winery as “Your” winery. And it is our solemn promise that we shall continue to strive for excellence in all facets of our business so that we can continue to be a source of pride for this great area.

Bear Creek Wines was started in 2017 by Alan and Shelly Lingenfelter. What started as an idea quickly became reality, as we dove into learning the wine-making process head-first and started laying out the plans to open our own winery. As we’ve worked tirelessly over the last year and a half developing our own recipes, we’re proud to showcase our wide variety of wines that quench just about everybody!

Nestled in the picturesque mountains of Central Pennsylvania Oak Spring Winery was founded in 1987 by John & Sylvia Schraff. About half way up the drive, an old oak tree grew at the spot where a spring came out of the ground and created a marshy area full of cattails. That tree inspired the name Oak Spring and became the symbol for the winery that still appears on the labels.
The Schraffs planted 3 acres of vineyard and in September 1987 and received their license to open a winery. By November they decided that they should open the winery to take advantage of the Christmas season.
They bought a building along the main North-South highway from Altoona. Originally a fruit market, the structure had about 7500 square feet of space, enough for a winemaking facility, case storage, a cold room for wine stability, the largest tasting room in Pennsylvania, and an extra space for winemaking or beer-brewing classes.
Shortly after the building became available, John’s son Scott decided he’d like to return to Altoona after spending 10 years working in New York City as a photojournalist, and learn the wine business. Five years later, Scott is running the winery, and John & Sylvia have retired from their full-time jobs and from day-to-day responsibilities at the winery.
Today the winery is producing 6,500 cases annually.
The Schraffs currently have 4 acres of producing vineyards. The remainder of grapes are purchased from growers around the State.
